In a year full of momentous events for us, one stood apart from all others: the Dec. 29 passing of our co-founder Jimmy Carter.
His death is an enormous loss to the Carter family, The Carter Center, and the world.
We received tens of thousands of heartfelt messages in the official condolence book at jimmycartertribute.org. Thank you. They were a tremendous comfort to the family and the Carter Center staff.
Jimmy Carter was many things to many people: former president; Nobel Peace Prize winner; human rights defender; grandfather; inspirational figure; and so much more. His departure from this life is a blow to all of us.
But there is work to be done, and we are going about it with the vigor and persistence he instilled in us. Pursuing President and Mrs. Carter’s vision, we will eradicate Guinea worm disease, support fragile and fledgling democracies, and empower women with information to improve their own lives. We will eliminate river blindness, trachoma, and lymphatic filariasis from wide swaths of the world. We will work to resolve conflicts and seek to avert political violence in the United States. We will strive to eliminate discrimination against people with mental health challenges.
In short, we will continue to work to make this world a better place.
It won’t be easy, but it never has been. With Jimmy Carter’s toughness and determination, we will pursue all these goals and new ones that come along.
President and Mrs. Carter have not only left us a strong moral legacy; they have left us a solid, stable, financially sound organization that is doing great things.
We are counting on you to keep partnering with us and supporting this work the way you always have. In these uncertain times, we must stick together. The importance of this work transcends one person’s — or one couple’s — lifetime. Thank you for your kindness and for your ongoing partnership in our mission.
